This exhibition highlights the state of Victoria's rich and diverse written culture, highlighting the stories, the voices, the spirit of independence that have made our literature unique. It traces Victoria's literary evolution from Indigenous storytelling through colonial classics to the vibrant contemporary writing scene.

The exhibition examines a diversity of 'literatures' - from the printed book and electronic media though to zines and the spoken word. It looks at Victoria's thriving literary communities including poetry, theatre, literary journals, children's books, artists' books and small presses. It explores every aspect of the world of books from passionate booksellers and independent publishers through to literary awards and festivals.

The Independent Type is the State Library of Victoria's contribution towards celebrating Melbourne's recognition as a UNESCO City of Literature.
