Where artists' books and the book arts meet online...

For anyone who knew Judith,,,and a great many book makers around the world did know her...she passed away several days ago peacefully at home..she so wanted to live to see inauguration day but it was not to be, Her wonderful book collection has gone to the University of California at Santa Barbara 's Art Library. She was a friend and mentor to me and will be greatly missed!

I was saddened to read about her passing, I had hoped that one day we would be able to get her to visit Australia for a conference or workshop.

If you are unfamiliar with Judith's work look here and here.

Although we never met, she very enthusiastically reviewed a book I published in 2005 on her Umbrella site. We had a nice little email correspondence too. A true fan of the book arts.

You are warmly invited to attend the celebration of Judy Hoffberg's life on Sunday, Feb. 8, 2009 at 11 am, at the art gallery Track 16 in Santa Monica's Bergamot Station (directions at http://www.track16.com./contact.php)

Several members of the local art community will speak.

An artist's book will be created in her memory, and deposited with her papers at the University of California, Santa Barbara. If you are interested in creating a page, please use 8-1/2 x 11" paper. Let your inspiration be Judy's perpetual curiosity about anything to do with libraries, books, and all kinds of art. The deadline is July 31, 2009.

There was a very nice obituary in Wednesday's Los Angeles Times: http://www.latimes.com/news/obituaries/la-me-judithhoffberg28-2009j...

A memorial fund, the proceeds of which will be donated to either the Artists' Book Collection at University of California, Santa Barbara, or Judy's Umbrelliana collection at University of California, San Diego, is being established.

Please forward to anyone who may be interested.

We hope you will be able to attend.

I met Judith here in London and in the States; she wrote some reviews of my work and was always supportive and so well informed about everything going on in the artist's book world. We hadn't been in touch for some years so I didn't know that she'd been ill. Very sorry to hear of her passing. My condolences to you and to all her friends and family.

Thanks for this information about the memorial book-I will definitely make something. Judith was one of the very first supporters I had in the book world-she put me in one my first show, and championed my work when it was in 'Women of the Book: Jewish Artists, Jewish Themes" It's hard to think of her gone.

I've just discovered this sad news. I met Judith in London at a special event Tanya Piexoto and I arranged in a pub in soho many years ago. (I think it was a kind of Artist Book Yearbook welcomes our great mentor to England type of thing...)

A charming woman and so enthusiastic for the books she so generously reviewed. My condolences to all friends and family, if you are reading this, I remember her fondly and she will be greatly missed
