The Art Gallery of York University Sponsors the Race to the ABotM.

Now is your chance to be recognised.

The Art Gallery of York University is now accepting submissions to the AGYU Artists Book of the Moment competition.

Following the closing deadline, our panel of adjudicators will assess all submissions. Taking into consideration their own eclectic tastes, a selection of the books will be deemed worthy of the AGYU ABotM designation – a rare honour indeed!

The singular book that rises to the top of the ABotM will receive a cash award of $1,500 (Canadian funds, of course).

Submission Deadline is 18 January 2010.

See our webpage for full details: http://www.theAGYUisOutThere.org/abotm or download the printable version here: AGYU_ABOTM.pdf

Deadline for The MCBA Prize extended!

A note from Minnesota Center for Book Arts:

We have received several emails from members of the international book artist community concerning logistics of submitting work for The MCBA Prize. In consideration of these concerns, we have chosen to extend the deadline for ALL entries for The MCBA Prize. This should allow ample time for the receipt of materials and for the timing of banking transactions.

Entries for The MCBA Prize are now due at Minnesota Center for Book Arts on or by March 20, 2009.

In total, over $8,000 will be awarded to four finalists and one winner.

The MCBA Prize, a new international honor awarded by Minnesota Center for Book Arts, is the first of its kind to recognize book art from across the field and celebrate the diversity of this vital discipline. All artists who use the book format as their primary means of expression are encouraged to apply. A distinguished panel of jurors, themselves leaders in the field, will consider all eligible work, from hand-printed fine press books to inexpensive pamphlets to one-of-a-kind sculptural works. The winner will be announced July 25, 2009.

For more information, visit MCBA's website: http://www.mnbookarts.org

FROM Book Arts List:

The Minnesota Book Awards Announces 2009 Book Artist Award Winner
January 27, 2009, SAINT PAUL, MN

The Friends of the Saint Paul Public Library is pleased to announce Paulette Myers-Rich as the winner of the 2009 Book Artist Award, an annual award of the Minnesota Book Awards. This award, co-sponsored by the Minnesota Center for Book Arts (MCBA), recognizes a Minnesota book artist or book artist collaborative group for excellence throughout a body of work, as well as significant contributions to Minnesota's book arts community.

Myers-Rich works extensively with black and white photography, with artists' books being her favored format as they allow the combination of image and text in conventional and non-traditional book forms.

"Contemporary book arts has given rise to a variety of structures that both embrace tradition and break with it," says Myers-Rich, "offering myriad forms and interesting challenges. Yet, regardless of the approach to artists' books, for me, the practice of craft is important. The book must be a compelling and satisfying object or environment that activates content, a work that satisfies the hands, the eyes and the mind." Myers-Rich won a Minnesota Book Award in 2000 for her fine press book "Broder," an award she shared with poet Anna Reckin, and again in 2006 for "Ghost Poems for the Living." She is an active member of several arts organizations, teaches at MCBA and several colleges and universities, and is a graduate program mentor at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design.

An exhibit celebrating Myers-Rich's work runs February 5 through March 15, 2009 at the Open Book building's Cowles Literary Commons, 1011 Washington Avenue South in Minneapolis.

A reception showcasing the exhibit takes place Thursday, February 26 from 5:30 to 8:00pm at MCBA, with a brief program and presentation at 7:00pm. The reception is free and open to the public, and features live music by Gary Schulte and Reynold Philipsek. Exhibits of Myers-Rich's work will also be featured at other venues throughout the state this year, including Saint Paul's Central Library where her work will be displayed March 23 through April.

Myers-Rich will receive special recognition and an award at the 21st annual Minnesota Book Awards gala on April 25, 2009 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Saint Paul Riverfront. Awards will also be presented that evening to the winners of the eight book categories (Children's Literature, General Nonfiction, Genre Fiction, Memoir & Creative Nonfiction, Minnesota, Novel & Short Story, Poetry, and Young People's Literature) and the winners of The Readers' Choice Award, sponsored by the Pioneer Press and TwinCities.com, and the Kay Sexton Award, recognizing an individual for significant contributions to Minnesota's literary community. Gala tickets go on sale February 2, 2009.

The Minnesota Book Awards is a statewide, year-round outreach program of The
Friends of the Saint Paul Public Library in partnership with the Office of the Mayor of Saint Paul and the Saint Paul Public Library. Please visit the website or call 651.366.6497 for more information about the Minnesota Book Awards.

Well spotted Bronwyn - here are the details:

Books...beyond words
East Gippsland Art Gallery's Award for Artists' Books
8 August - 1 September 2009

The East Gippsland Art Gallery is calling for entries for this inaugural award and exhibition of artists' books to be held in August 2009.
Books ... beyond words aims to showcase excellence in expression, innovation in concept and in the use of materials in contemporary artists' books as well as pushing the boundaries of the definition of ‘book' and exploring it as sculptural form.‘
Artists' books' is a very broad term and trying to describe an artist book to those unfamiliar with the genre can be difficult. The easiest way is to recommend to ‘google' artists' books and a door to a new world of wonder and delight will be opened.
Generally, artists' books may be thought of as a book, unique or multiple, which has been made by an artist. There are books that embrace the traditional structure of a book and others that are something of a sculptural object.
Artists' books are used as a medium for self-expression often using cross-disciplinary media. They may be constructed from a varied range of materials from felt to metal, cardboard to wood, handmade paper to ceramics. Whatever the technique and material the ‘book' encompasses concepts associated with the fine arts.
The East Gippsland Art Gallery has initiated a number of artists' book exhibitions over the last few years and is extremely pleased to be able to introduce this event that will become a biennial award and exhibition.
CD entries close 28 April 2009 for exhibition August 2009
