The Rare Book School (RBS) is an independent non-profit educational institute supporting the study of the history of books and printing and related subjects. Founded in 1983, it moved to its present home at the University of Virginia in 1992. Look them up here.

The College Book Art Association supports and promotes academic book art education by fostering the development of its practice, teaching, scholarship and criticism.

Typography and Book Summer School
ANU School of Art Book Studio, Canberra, Australia
February 8-12, 2010

This will be a loosely-structured course covering the basics of letterpress and bookbinding that will primarily cater at the time to the skill levels and needs of the participants.

Concrete learning outcomes are: handling wood and metal type; how to work a flatbed cylinder press; traditional and alternative printing methods; basic book imposition methods; simple bookbinding methods.

This summer school is suitable for graphic designers who want to play with physical typography, book artists interested in accessing letterpress for small amounts of text, and design students, among others.

The cost is Aus$750, which includes tuition, basic materials and lunch. Accommodation is not provided. There are 10 places available.

5th Australian Artists' Book Forum
Artspace Mackay, Saturday 10 & Sunday 11 April 2010

The 5th Australian Artists' Books Forum, to be held at Artspace Mackay on Saturday 10 & Sunday 11 April 2010, will again bring together artists, curators, writers, academics, students and collectors to discuss artists' books and book arts in Australia. The two-day forum builds on the success of previous conferences held at Artspace Mackay and again expects to attract speakers and delegates from across the country. Part of a larger, overall program for the gallery, the 5th Australian Artists' Book Forum will be complimented by workshops and masterclasses; the announcement of the 2010 Libris Awards: Australian Artists' Book Prize winners and exhibition of the finalists' works; an exhibition by 2008 Libris Award winner Deanna Hitti and displays drawn from the Mackay Regional Council's significant collection of artists' books.

Letterpress Basics with Art Larson
July 11–12, Saturday–Sunday
Tuition: $220 Materials: $30
Enrollment limited to seven.
Special location: Horton Tank Graphics, Hadley, MA, U.S.A.

This two-day workshop is designed as an introduction to letterpress printing and hand typesetting. It also serves well as a refresher for those of you who want to review and practice basic skills.

You can expect to learn the lay of the case, set and justify lines of type, make up a color form, letterspace type, use a slug cutter, and kern type on a Hamilton saw.

You will also learn to print. You will learn how to operate a Vandercook No. 4 Proof Press (there are two in the shop) and a Vandercook 325G. Topics to be explored will be packing the press, making ready the form, locking up type, adjusting the form rollers, and fine inking and impression.

Each participant will print a multi-colored broadside in a small edition, six copies to be shared with the other participants.

No previous experience is required.

SLV 2009-10 Fellowships

Applications for the State Library of Victoria 2009-10 Fellowships are now open.

Australian scholars, artists, writers, historians and others are invited to apply.

The Fellowships are open to researchers across a range of disciplines, and offer financial support and the opportunity to engage closely with the Library's extensive collection.

Fellows are provided with a study room in the Library and can access the Library outside normal opening hours.

The Fellowships on offer include:

• Creative Fellowships – Up to eight Fellowships for Australians working in any creative field, including writers, independent scholars, musicians and artists. Grants range from $12,500 for Fellowships of three months to $50,000 for 12 months.

• La Trobe Society Fellowship – One six-month Fellowship for a historian, with a grant of $25,000.

• Georges Mora Foundation Fellowship – One six-month Fellowship for a visual artist, with a grant of up to $20,000.

• Dr Joseph Brown AO Fellowship – One six-month Fellowship for study in art history, with a grant of up to $20,000.

Potential applicants are encouraged to attend an information evening at the Library's Village Roadshow Theatrette at 6pm on Monday 16 February.

Applications for the Creative, La Trobe Society and Dr Joseph Brown AO Fellowships close on 27 March, and the closing date for Georges Mora Foundation Fellowship submissions is 1 May.

The educational and professional prerequisites for RBS courses vary. Some courses are broadly directed toward antiquarian booksellers, book collectors, bookbinders, conservators, teachers, and professional and avocational students of the history of books and printing. Others are primarily intended for archivists and for research and rare book librarians and curators.

The Center for Book Arts is pleased to announce the Stein Family Scholarship Fund for Advanced Studies in Book Arts. In 2009, the Center will award 2 scholarships to individuals who have demonstrated a commitment to the artistic endeavors of the book arts. The purpose of this program is to provide opportunities to individuals committed to developing careers in the book arts field, and to further the growth of this artistic profession.

Stein Scholars will receive free tuition for courses and access to the studios to develop their work for one year. They will have the opportunity to teach certain core courses at the Center, depending on their background. Scholars will act as shop stewards in the studios for a set specific number of hours per week, supervising renters and volunteers in the printing and/or binding areas. No travel or lodging reimbursements are available, though a small stipend for materials may be provided.

The Sallie Bingham Center for Women's History and Culture, part of the Rare Book, Manuscript, and Special Collections Library at Duke University, announces the availability of Mary Lily Research Grants for research travel to our collections.

The Sallie Bingham Center documents the public and private lives of women through a wide variety of published and unpublished sources. Collections of personal papers, family papers, and organizational records complement print sources such as books and periodicals. Particular strengths of the Sallie Bingham Center are feminism in the U.S., women's prescriptive literature from the 19th & 20th centuries, girls' literature, zines, artist's books by women, gender & sexuality, and the history & culture of women in the South.

Mary Lily Research Grants are for undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, and independent scholars conducting research using collections held by the Sallie Bingham Center. Grant money may be used for travel, photocopying, and living expenses while pursuing research at the Rare Book, Manuscript, and Special Collections Library. Applicants must live outside of a 50-mile radius from Durham, NC. The maximum award per applicant is $1,000.
