Artist Books 3.0

Where artists' books and the book arts meet online...

After many pulled sheets came shells and bowls in cast paper shapes, then the Clam Up and Library of Words series, in scale and whimsy Clam Chowder is recent work. I enjoy natural materials of white-on-white work and words of contemplation, where I aim to understand unspoken words that may be the true spirit of the un-uttered written words. Where language begins. I persistently push myself in new pathways to share values of beauty beyond craftsmanship of an object. The intent is to mend a broken world or reshape the conversation.

Clam Up made its debut at a recent MCBA artist cooperative exhibit I curated with Raven Miller in January through April 2017. I gave introductory words below and asked everyone to write a thought on making, process or practice on the work they submitted for their work in general.

Making | Process | Practice
Making is a place of thought, trials, and actions, where one is wholly content or vulnerable. It is the space to enjoy playing with planned or unplanned materials. Where a visual voice is applied to hopes and dreams, where awe inspired moments to appear, muscle memory is built on experimentation, failure and success, to move forward. It is a place to be alone, draw individuals in, or to intersect with others in a community.

In Process, theme evolves and work transforms. This is where to plan and execute, and continue to be fluid and nimble for the unplanned effects that need adjustments or to be changed. Time can move rapidly or be suspended in the process.

In Practice, craftsmanship should give way to wonder. Where design, content, technique, skill, or individual elements come together in a balance to make artistry strong and engaging.

Available to everyone: Robert Jacks & Printed Matter

10 September - 24 October 2016

Printed Matter is pleased to announce Available to Everyone: Robert Jacks and Printed Matter, curated by Peter Anderson.

The exhibition presents two connected bodies of material: a survey of artists’ books by Australian painter, sculptor and bookmaker Robert Jacks (1942-2014), and an extensive selection of publications drawn from Jacks’ own collection, many of which were purchased from Printed Matter in the early years of the organization.
