Serialization

Since I last posted about this I have a better understanding of the effect of serialization on traffic. It has tripled users and increased traffic from 2000 to 5000 human visits a month. Since I started this I have done three books. Each time, when the book finishes the traffic returns to the base 2000. The same has happened twice when the blog has been down for repairs. Each serial has prompted download of about 30 e-books. Unfortunately, there is no crossover from the blog to the web. With…See More

Charles Brownson replied to Pickaxe Publishing's discussion Print On Demand & Artist's Books
"There are damned good PODs and I stand in admiration at the work someone has done to make them, which is considerable. But PODs and artists books can't be theorized in the same way on the basis of good workmanship."

Serialization: initial results

Posted on October 23, 2011 at 1:34 0 Comments

A couple of months ago I wrote that I was trying a new digital marketing strategy. The plan was to serialize my books on my blog -- they are novels besides being artists books, so this makes sense. The first one, As Told To, a detective story in 7 parts, finishes this week. A look at the blog statistics shows a slight increase on publication day of from one to three human visitors, an effect which lasts for two days after publication. The monthly total of human visitors is also up,…

Serialization: marketing strategy

Posted on September 9, 2011 at 16:34 0 Comments

Friends -- I'm trying out a new marketing strategy. Since my books use long texts, I thought of serializing them on my blog . The idea is to use the texts to attract people to my website where, since I don't sell my books but give them away, the reader of the text might want to download a graphic version. Or look at the…

Resonance

Posted on April 14, 2011 at 1:57 0 Comments

Recently on my own blog I've been discussing the issue of resonance as the emotional glue which hold the pieces of an artists book together -- in my case the visual and textual. My latest post http://ocotilloarts.com/blog/?p=658 puts the problem in a context of personal imagery evoked by music. I invite you to explore the blog for articles on this topic over the last several months. The big problem is that resonance is personal, and so there is… Continue

Hi Charles, I added your webpage to the ebooks group; somehow in the process I accidently deleted your comment on the same page! Very sorry about that, was a mis-click!

Thanks for the links! I'll spend some time with them tomorrow.
Have you had difficulties with photoshop? My brother in law gave me some great advice when I first got it- I have the cheapie, Elements version- which was, don't try to figure out all the things it can do. Figure out what you want it to do and how to make it do it. It helped me focus amid all the magic and after about 2or 3 solid months of slogging through, I had it. I will never know all the things it can do, but I can use the ones I want. Let me know if you have questions after you look at my website. L.

I had not heard of Golden gel transfer- that sounds like something to look in to- I agree that getting text and image to blend is very difficult. When I am making my books on photoshop(see my web site) it's no problem, but with collage it's another story. I got some transparent "paper" to print type on and then put on to the collages- it has a sticky back- but I haven't spent much time with it yet- it's shiny, which may be a problem. I'll look for the things you mentioned-
The problem with my handwriting I think is just that I've always hated it- I've worked on it a lot and it's better, but still clumsy-
Any more info you have aobut transfer materials would be greatly appreciated- or info on where to look. Thanks! Lisa

"...I need to keep Art Spiegelman's achievement in mind, opening not only new content but audiences, increasing artist's options."

I wholly agree. Have just added a comment to that effect on the 21st Cent. book discussion. Some comics artists are breaking out of boundaries that 'artists' book makers' are puzzling over. Maybe it's not so complicated.

Hi Charles, many thanks for your response. I had a browse of your website and am very impressed with your work. Have downloaded the PDF of your article (Now the artist's book now) and so much of it accords with my own thoughts and experience. It would be good to discuss by email, if you wish. My email is on the sidebar of my blog:
