- 1st INTERNATIONAL ARTIST BOOK FAIR OF MADRID
Innovative and educational in character, MASQUELIBROS seeks to spread the idea of books as art objects and to create a space to unite all of those who work and investigate in the field of artist books.
The artist book, as a concept and a format, transmits ideas verbally and visually by utilizing a wide variety of materials, techniques and meanings. With its special emphasis on presentation it encompasses a universe of creative possibilities. This is a kind of artwork where creativity has a fundamental role and where “the book is a means and not an end.”
The MASQUELIBROS Artist Book Fair makes it possible for visual artists, visual poets, editors, art critics, professors, art students, art collectors, bibliophiles and people interested in culture to gather in one place and to facilitate research, creative activity, promotion and the exchange of information specific to THE ARTIST BOOK as a genre of the Fine Arts. All of which is why it is especially important that this event will be held in Madrid where, until now there has been no venue for this kind of exchange.
MASQUELIBROS arises from the intention to fill this vacuum and counts on the collaboration of institutions like the Madrid Associated Center of UNED (Spanish National of Distance University) where the fair will be held. The Madrid City Hall and national and international artists are also collaborating in the creation of this fair.
Finally, we would like to point out that the philosophy of the organization of the MASQUELIBROS Fair is to facilitate a wide participation, by means of financial grants, so that artists and groups that otherwise would not be able to present their artwork and projects participate in the fair. The fair also establishes basic criteria for participation so that there is a level of quality, originality and consistency in the artworks and projects presented.

The UNED (Spanish National University of Distance Learning) presents the following course as part of the Continuing University Education academic calendar 2011-2012.

The winners of the MASQUELIBROS 1ST INTERNATIONAL ARTIST BOOK COMPETITION

After a lengthy deliberation and due to the excellence and quantity of the artworks submitted to the MASQUELIBROS 1st Artist Book Competition, the Jury decided to expand the awards to four first place awards instead of three awards as was expressed in the competition description. All four awards are equal first place awards.
