The upcoming CBAA conference in Portland includes a show called 'The Assignment' which is highlighting the assignments people give (to their students or to themselves) and the resulting works.

Well, I finally finished A'tugwaqan, my limited edition, woodcut/letterpress book on myth and legends of the Mi'kmaq People of Nova Scotia.
I am a printmaker and letterpress book artist. My work in books is an outgrowth of my other work in prints and drawings. It is often related to folk lore and legend, history, the landscape, or poetry by various writers, all accompanied by my original images. These have been mostly woodcut in recent years, but can be whatever is most appropriate to the concept. I also illustrate books for other printers/presses on occasion. I teach printmaking and book arts at the Hartford Art School, West Hartford, CT.
Thanks for the welcome. Let's visit each other soon--we're so close it's silly not to. I've seen some of your stuff before--I think maybe Carol Blinn was showing it to me? Impressive color registration on the woodcuts. What press do you use?
Thanks for the welcome. I'll try to check in on this networking site as often as I can. It looks like a good one. Seems from the messages on your page that it is working!
Dear Jim, thanks for your comment. I spose shed is a bit of an understatement but that's the Aussie way, if you blow your own trumpet in any way you're considered a wanker. But yep it is a pretty good studio. I've always worked in make do poky spaces so it's really nice to finally have a big decent space all my own. I have to say i absolutely love your work (and i'm usually pretty critical). I can't believe how you do it. What editions do you do of the books? are they all hand printed? How the hell do you do it? The American folky feel brings back these surreal childhood memories for me for some reason. Weird but true. Cowboys around a campfire under the moon and maybe a coyote up the hill fills me with a warm nostalgia,... and i've never been to America in my life! I'd like to though oneday, maybe i could visit? Anyhoo, keep up the good work. All the very best, David
Hey, Jim, how are you? I'm happy in Boston. I'm a dean and VP at Emerson College, and also Prez of the venerable old Society of Printers. I'm also VP for membership of the College Book Art Assoc. Hoping to see you at the meetings: www.collegebookart.org/
Will you be going to Philly for the Hybrid Book Symposium in early June? Some of the old Madison gang will be there (Barb T, John Risseeuw...) Would be great to see you.
My wife, Ruth Rogers, would probably like to see some of your recent work to buy for Wellelsey's collection. You should give her a holler:
Yes, I worked with Walter and was (and am) good friends with his ex, Mary. I think you finished at UW as I was starting- I was there from '83 to '87 with a year off for the '85-'86 academic year. I have some fabulous wood block prints associated with your name in my memory bank, but my files get pretty scrambled sometimes!
I have lived in Newfoundland since 1992, but still try to get to NY every couple of years. I'm due for a visit, so I'll add visiting you to my schedule next time I'm there.
hi Jim, your work looks very detailed... i am jet to set up my page with pics of my work. I work with letterpress and concrete poetry. All my work is test images no pictures as such. i will upload images soon. good to chat and would love to chat more soon, B
