I restrain from clarifying exactly that I am a Book Artist, Book Sculptor or creator of Artist Books because there is the challenge as to how we make those distinctions and what those labels mean.
My works focus has always been communication, at present, tending more to question the perplexities of human engagement and interaction. This subject area perhaps plays homage to my educational background in graphic communication. Semiotic analysis, the denotation and connotation of objects heavily influence my path with the production of work. I utilise a material form that is unexpectedly common, but my application and metaphorical play with this media, i hope, gives rise to challenging and innovative work.
The exhibition presents two connected bodies of material: a survey of artists’ books by Australian painter, sculptor and bookmaker Robert Jacks (1942-2014), and an extensive selection of publications drawn from Jacks’ own collection, many of which were purchased from Printed Matter in the early years of the organization.
