Background
Joanne B Kaar

Joanne has worked as a self employed fibre artist since obtaining an MA at Manchester Metropolitan University in 1992. Her studio on Dunnet Head overlooks the Pentland Firth and Dunnet Bay. In 2004, she spent five exciting months in Taiwan as Artist in residence at the Chaoyang University and as consultant to the Su-Ho Paper Museum Taipei, culminating in exhibitions at the Su-Ho and Tower 101 (the tallest building the world). In 2006 she completed a 3 months residency for the Durness Development Group in Mackay Country covering the far north west corner of mainland Scotland. These residencies were supported by the National Lottery through the Scottish Arts Council and by partnership funding from Highland Year of Culture 2007. She is the author of the book ‘Papermaking and Bookbinding Coastal Inspirations’ which was published by GMC in 2003. From 2006, Joanne also sits on the board for CraftScotland.

During 2008/9, Joanne will be focusing her research on the living history museum of ‘Mary-Ann’s Cottage’, a croft house built in the 1850’s by Mary-Ann’s grandfather. Situated just a few yards from Joanne’s own home, she has over a number of years visited Mary-Ann’s, and made sketches of artefacts in the croft. One particular story which has inspired her, concerns Mary-Ann’s father, William Young. He worked on the maiden voyage of the ‘Westland’ from Glasgow to New Zealand in 1879. His sea chest is to be found in Mary-Ann’s cottage. Inside the lid is a painting of the Westland. As her research and ideas unfold, Joanne will post images and info on her project blog.

Hi Joanne -
did you attend the opening??

Have you any photos of the opening or the exhibition in situ? I did submit for this project but was unselected.

I would love to see the individual artworks that WERE selected.

best wishes

Aine

ps I have just written IRIS books an email about it so maybe they will have some info as well.

Hi, Joanne...I think I've commented on the "boat" blog. And Jackie Morris jogged my memory about making a paper boat. Still working on one that might be reasonably waterproof.Hmm...The prototype is still going - around the living room floor!
I will have it in the mail in time!
