Book arts in Europe?

I'll be moving to Germany in April due to my husband's job transfer. We planto be there for approximately 3 years. Am very interested in connecting withthe book arts world over there, both in Germany and Europe. I'd like tocontinue studying with excellent instructors, attending conferences/fairs,perhaps exhibiting my work, and ideally find a studio with the equipmentthat I am leaving behind (I currently work out of Pyramid Atlantic and aprintmaker's coop at the Torpedo Factory in Alexandria,…See More

You fox! I told you you'd get accepted... next year WSW! Congratulations :-)

Hi Kelly,
Yes, I got to go to the Dinner Party Opening in San Francisco. I haven't seen it installed in the Brooklyn Museum yet, but maybe on my next trip to NYC.

Your goals sound ambitious as ever! Btw, I think you could easily apply for a residency, especially with the Moving Parts projects and your ballet dress book. Also, with the documentary. Just an idea for when you are ready.

It has been a challenging winter here. My heat pump broke and a deer slammed into my car, so I am thankful I had a wood stove, insurance, and no injuries. I'm in LA for a couple of weeks to see my husband. I'm busy with a documentary project in Lexington, and some work on my time at the Woman's Building. I guess one of my goals is to update my website!

Kelly!

I've been away, hence the late reply. How are you? Back into the swing of things? I didn't know Betye Saar, so checked out her website. Very interesting! I wish I had that knack yet to combine images etc. like she does. But I keep practicing :-)

I have been accepted for Cornucopia, so I am pretty excited about that. Also for Jason Thompson's "Playing with Journals", but unfortunately he fell ill, and is not finishing this book for the time being. Next on my list is WSW (deadline 1 April!); I don't like leaving things till the last moment, but I had to go away unexpectedly, and had other deadlines in between. So that has to happen THIS week. I have the outline all ready, just have to make it pretty and sounding good. I am entering other exhibitions as well, if you need details, let me know.

In July I'll be attending PBI, so I'm pretty excited about that too. I got into Emily Martin's "Movables in a Book Format", Frank Brannon's "Paper Sculpture" (do you know him?) and Melissa Jay Craig's "Beyond Inlays and Onlays - Tactile Books". I had applied for a bookbinding course by Jeff Peachy, but didn't get that one.

So that's the latest from here. Heard anything from Susan (Apart from her latest postcard)? I'll email her as well.

Take care and happy booking!

Hi Kelly,
Just checking to make sure the boxjam is happening tonight. If you have a chance to confirm that would be great. If not, I'll just show up. Looking forward to getting into some work. --Steve

Sounds good, Kelly. Thanks for the word. I've marked my calendar and I hope I can make it. Yes, box making is indeed quite exacting -- one reason it's so gratifying when it works out well.

Thanks for your reply. Re: ArtSpring, I was there to talk to Chris about putting some work in the store, but never did as I got totally consumed getting ready for a 3-day sale at the Corcoran in mid-December. So I want to reconnect with ArtSpring. I very much like the idea of a community-run store.

Somewhere in my clicking around yesterday I noticed you were organizing box making sessions at Pyramid to complete the edition of small books which you did for a fund raiser (for CityDance if I recall?). I'd like to participate if you are needing people. I've made exactly one clamshell, but numerous other boxes (some cloth covered) so I've got the principles. Could I just show up? Any details you'd like to send I'd be happy to receive. Hope to see you at Pyramid.

Hi, Kelly,

Just looked at the documentary. WONDERFUL project! Being someone who has always loved to collaborate, your collaboration just amazed me! My collaboration will be a bit different -- the choreographers/dancers and I will work together to create a set for a dance. No idea yet what this will look like!, but since I have done a giant book, that people can walk through . . . . .

Let's stay in touch, if you are willing, Kelly. I think your work is wonderful.

Hi Kelly, Almost have the essay ready to send. I want to spend part of tomorrow finishing it up. My internet is so slow here for some reason I'm going to HAVE to go to Starbucks tomorrow morning for an artisan roll and coffee and some fact checking. Maybe I'll take the dog, he'll love it. Great internet there. A hardship! Susan

Kelly, Thanks for all that you've sent, re:essay. My husband was here and we were out of town. Back at work. I should have something for you by next weekend. Hope that isn't too late. How is everything going? Forgive the delay in writing, I had email trouble last week and my message to you here didn't go through. Hope this one does.
Best, Susan

Kelly, Try Scripps College, in California. I think Judy Harvey Sahak is still there. They are a woman's college and have a collection of books by women. You can use my name.

Try Janice Braun at Mills College Special Collections (Oakland). Try Sandra Kroupa at University of Washington, Seattle, The Allen Library. She has amassed a collection of artist's books there.

The Getty Center, Research Library in Bel Air is a crap shoot, depending on what they are or aren't buying at the moment. But I would send info to them.

I haven't sold directly to Wellesly, (sp) but would try there.

It would be good to make up a small package, info about the book, maybe a postcard like the one you showed me, with order information. You can also try a pre-publication price, $xxx until some date, to encourage people to buy now. The price goes up after that date.

I would also take your book around to local university collections and show it and leave order information. You probably want local collections to buy your books, starting with this one. Hope this helps.
