A large piece of work made in direct response to an invitation to show my work at the 'Recollect 2009' exhibition. Made in a similar way to 'Exhibits' - more images to come . . .
I have always been a collector, as far back as I can remember. I was about three years old when I started my first collection of sea shells, very soon I channeled that down to one particular type of shell - the 'Painted Top Shell', from there I became more fussy and only collected the perfect specimens and kept them in a glass jar.
The next collection was of rabbit tails - when my mum took me into the local butcher shop the butcher, Ted, would take a rabbit down off the hook and remove it's tail for me, after Ted retired Robert continued the ritual. For many years I collected those fluffy little tails and put them into a box.
When I was at junior school all the girls had a bead collection, at break time we would gather in the playground to 'swap beads' - oh the diamonds I handled in those days! I still have my bead collection today.
I was married very young and had six children over fifteen years, my life was my family. When I was about 40 I realised it was time for me to find myself, I went to college and studied textile art for a couple of years, then took my foundation in 3d. This was when I realised I was a compulsive collector.
I followed this with my degree and emerged with a 2.1 in Ceramic Art. The following year I went to a London Uni and took 'Book Arts' (post grad). Next came a year out while I consolidated all I had learned. And now I have started on my Masters Degree in Book Arts.
My work has always had an obsessive quality and this is showing more and more in my work.
Went to the opening of new BOOKARTSCENTER in Denmark yesterday and attended a lecure by Sara Bodman. Interesting! Now I´m just chekking out some of the links she handed out and suddenly I find you/your work via the BOOKMARK VI PROJECT at uwe. I´ll definitely keep an eye on you/your work - in future...
Kind regards
Hanne
(N.B. Somehow your website is not up? Momentarily I hope...)
Thanks for your kind comment on my 'flying books' and your interest in my work. Unfortunately I don't have a picture of the hung up mobile. But I have added some making off pictures (visible for friends only, because of their imperfection) as a replacement. - Hope you'll like them!
Having had a look at your memorial boxes I am even more delighted that you like my work. Such detailed and intricate works!
