How cool, Megan! I'm up in Coffs Harbour and haven't made it as far as Melbourne yet, but will definitely put you on my list of places to go. Good luck with your gallery, regards, Sara

Background
I came back to art the long way round after twenty years setting up and running small businesses in the UK. I trained as a printmaker with Martyn Grimmer and Emma Stibbon in Bristol, and then at the University of the West of England. Now I live on the mid-north coast of New South Wales, Australia, and I work primarily in print and artists' books.

Book Art Object

Way back in July I posted something about putting together an Artists' Book Club together and lo! A few months on, may I present (drum roll and fanfare...) "Book Art Object" which is a group, a blog and a project all rolled into one.

The group is currently working around a text which is a poem by Australian poet Rosemary Dobson, title "Learned Absence". It is a poem about emptiness after loss - presumably the loss of a relationship… Continue

Book Artists' Book Club

I've already put my head above the parapet with this one on my blog (see blog posts here) so the idea's out in public but I hadn't thought to put it up here until now. If you're interested in participating, read on and get in touch with me...

I'm putting together a group of people who make artists books and/or book objects with a view to creating a sort of book club for book artists. A piece of writing (novel, prose, poetry, plays, songs..… Continue

Sturt Winter School

I've just spent a chilly week at the Sturt Winter School in Mittagong, NSW, Australia, kneeling at the feet of Caren Florance (well not literally - that really would have been cold!) on her excellent 'Beautiful Books and Boxes' course. It's been a fun week and I came away with about a dozen books ranging from Asian stab bindings (which I've done before) to a caterpillar binding. The benefits of going on a course are many if, as was the case here, your tutor is knowledgeable, engaging and flexibl… Continue

Venice trip

I wonder, do any of you have recommendations about artists' book related or printmaking related places in either Venice or Padova (Padua) that I could visit later this year? It could be suppliers, papermakers, print studios, art collections, art schools... I'm planning a European trip courtesy of my Air Miles and I'll be taking in the IMPACT conference in Bristol, UK and a family holiday in the Veneto, half way between Venice and Padova and it would be great to have some specific book-arts/print… Continue

New Year, new things

I realise I'm a bit behind with blog posts but that's because - after a slow start - I've been getting into some new work. First off the block has been finishing two small books that are part of a series of 16 books that share the same dimensions and the same materials but differ in construction. They've all been created by participants in Codex 6 at Southern Cross University in Lismore, New South Wales (eastern Australia, about half way down and a little inland, for those who don't live here!).… Continue

I Sara, Thanks for your comment on Hand Held. It is a pretty cool little gallery and it's getting better and better with more interest and a really good line up of exhibitions for next year. I hope you get a chance to get down to Melbourne, there are lots of interesting things going on in the book arts, and then pop in to see us while you are here!

Thanks for your comments Sara. My coffin box and folded book i a prototype for a printed book I want to do with letter press soon as I learn how to transform my drawings of skeletons onto a polymer plate. Dance of the Dead light and funny that is how we have to see those dark things.

Thanks Sara,

I'm glad I stumbled across the site. As far as the blog profile goes, I always figure that a little humor goes a long way.

When you finish your Jacob's Ladder, I would love to see it.

I always love hearing about the process of how people produce their work. It's fascinating to me how people conceptualize and execute their work. And to see how beautiful things were produced by hardwork and determination and sometimes accompanied by frustration! :) It's inspiring!

Hi Sara,
Beautiful work. I easpecially love the bridge and porcelain book. Are the words written on mylar for the bridge?

The effect of pressing things into the page of the book and then having them burn out during firing reminds me of wood that has been affected by termites - something that I think looks really pretty!

My partner is a woodworker and besides bulding banjos, he builds book arts tools and lately has been using recovered wood to make boxes for "bone" folders. You can see some samples at Handmade Book Arts Tools

Thanks for visitng my site & thanks for the kind words!

Thank you. I did several Jacob's Ladders a few years ago, & that was the last one I had. I've since sold it, & have been thinking about doing some more even more elaborate ones.

Thankyou, Sara. And now I've put your face to the lovely "bridge."
I am very much a minnow in the book pond, but do want to focus more on books. The first half of this year is taken up with printmaking.
If you do come up to Mackay I hope to meet you.

Hi Sara
apologise for delay in replying - but there is always so much to do - in response to your question - yes I do work outside Camberwell - I used to do a lot of work in schools but now the work with communities is usually connected to the public art I am involved in/with. - just realised that I have ot back to you on this - a glimpsed into my head - I'm on jury duty at the moment so I'm a little scrambled - hope you are well - bye for now

hey Sara, my apologies. how stupid of me .Yes I saw an image of your print in Imprint. It looked great. I've been really stupid at times lately!

the proposal I wrote for my PhD is more on the borders issue with some artists books in the outcome and some performance. Its hard isn't it to get something together that might work. I guess I have to wait to see if I get in then have a chat to my supervisor.

I'll let you know what happens. We must keep in touch as we PhD together.

Best wishes
Clyde
