Eyewitness by Theo Strasser & Peter Lyssiotis , bound by Monica Oppen -2008

If the Chinese curse 'May you live in interesting times ' holds any truth then EYEWITNESS has been made during such a time. The book was completed in 2008, but was made over the previous two years beneath the shadows of wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, Sudan, Lebanon, political turmoil in Palistine, Myanmar, Chechnya, Zimbabwe, East Timor, Sri Lanka and North Korea; and the all encompasing War on Terror.
In Australia there was not only our military adventures in Iraq, Afghanistan, East Timor and the Solomons, but also David HIcks's five year detention without trail in Guantanamo, and the Howard government's inhuman Pacific Solution to the regions refugee problem.
EYEWITNESS uses Magnani Incisioni 650 paper 310 gsm, and has been bound by Monica Oppen ..we are both passionate about artist books and seek to give them relevance to the 21st century artistic practice.......

I guess thats the reason I opened the gallery, so artist books could be seen. So they can now be seen here, I'm just not sure how much they are understood but I am working on that! Of course my shelves aren't completely dust free but thats another story.....

Hi Theo,
I got to see 'eyewitness' in sydney on the weekend, what a powerful and emotive book. images conjured up in my mind from the text linger still. it stopped me in my tracks...bloody war. at the end of the day.....religion..whatever aside we all bleed the same red blood......

Hi theo, yes it is unique. a small edition of a book like this is something that i would like to explore within the next year or so, if i have time, as am going on to my honours year at uni. but you never know. i would like to get something big scale done for the next librus prize early 2010.

Hi Theo,
sizes range from passport size to 50 cm x 15 cm. scrub turkey topographical is just over closed and 200 cm x 200 cm open.
Can't remember the prices exactly Julie at Barratt Galleries handles all that for me, but I think from $220 up to $2000.
Just finished my latest, 120 pages of handmade paper screenprinted and collaged, then case bound. six months work! will post images shortly.
cheers

Hi Theo,
Thanks for the comment on my russian passport.
i do all my binding myself, at the moment I am final semester visarts degree, majoring in painting and printmaking.
No representation in Melbourne as yet. Julie at Barratt Galleries up here in Nthn NSW, looks after my books and state library of QLD has two of my false document series of passports in their collection, working on some new pieces at the moment and will post some progress shots soon, am hoping to submit these for the Librus Book Prize next year. working with longstitch binding this time round, new process and looking forward to the experience. cheers

Theo, very funny, I'm still on my L plates with this set-up, but now I know where to track you down when you're not at the office! Steve
