The Dissemination of Unique Books into the World as Mail Art

Posted on March 4, 2011 at 20:32 3 Comments

I predominately make one-off unique books. When they are bought, they sit on shelves gathering dust, very seldom seeing the light of day. So now, once they are made, I cut them up and send them out as mail art into the world. A process based art practice.  The World is a Town, inspired by the Novgorod Codex was the first recycled hand made book to  suffer this fate. The second book to undergo the knife is Bones of Contention. This work originally took nine months to complete. In one…

The World is a Town is a unique artist's book I made in 2009. It is

based on the Novgorod Codex which dates back to the 11th century. For

further information on this book see my website www.cherylpennartistsbooks.com - it is Book 38.

ANYWAY!! I intend to disseminate this work as Mail Art. Everyone who sends me

mail art interpreting the title "The World is a Town" will receive a

mail art piece of this… Continue

Dear Cheryl,

Thanks so much for your very kind words about my book "10 Seconds of Falling" for your "Encyclopaedia of Everything" Collaboration.  And an unlimited thank you to you for triggering my new found interest in making books - resulting from that course you gave at The Labia some years ago.   :-)

Hi Cheryl,  thanks for the welcome.  I've had a look at your blog and your images are really intriguing and interesting.  I'm pretty new to the phenomenon of collaborative book arts, with my first project being BookArtObject2012.  I'm looking forward to doing more and "meeting" more interesting artists like yourself.  Kind Regards,  Robyn (rObfOs)

Thanks :) looks like a great group, I hope to have time to collaborate later on this year!
I'm also planning an artists books month in my small exhibition space in the autumn, will send out invites when it's all finalised, meanwhile it's inspiring looking at all the great books here!

Hello Cheryl,

Thank you very much for your beautiful book - it arrived on Christmas eve just like an unexpected present! I really should have left it to open the following day, but the little kid inside me just got the better of me! Wonderful use of mixed media. Simply beautiful.

I am just about to post some images to get my area off to a start!

I am hoping to be much more productive with my artists books next year, and am looking forward to getting involved in more collaborative projects too.

All the best to you and yours for 2013,

Christopher

Hi Cheryl,

As a bibliophile and a printmaker joining this group feeds my abiding obsessions. I look forward to participating in the next book project, especially if it is an accordion-fold book. Thank you for the kind welcome!

Cheers,

Kathleen

Hello Cheryl,

Thanks so much for answering from the other side of the planet ! I would love to take part in a future accordeon fold book ( 10cmx 42cm) so just let me know about the next possible one . I'm preparing an exhibition of artists' books which will be in october in Marseille so I can't project to do both accordeon book and zine.

And i must learn how (and take the time) to put photos of my work on my profile !

xxx Martine
