I come from a fine art background. Within my artist practice I explore boundaries and preconceptions, in particular the distinctions between craft and fine art and gender stereotyping. My work challenges and subverts activities, traditionally associated with women and domesticity,
I manipulate and re-contextualize a wide variety of mundane found and discarded materials to create a dichotomy between something which is worthless and something that is valued; value created by the investment of manual labour, care, consideration and time.
The exhibition presents two connected bodies of material: a survey of artists’ books by Australian painter, sculptor and bookmaker Robert Jacks (1942-2014), and an extensive selection of publications drawn from Jacks’ own collection, many of which were purchased from Printed Matter in the early years of the organization.
