Artist Books 3.0

Where artists' books and the book arts meet online...

Micro-Pages is a project that hopes to start a conversation about the issues surrounding the display of artists books. Displaying book art is a constant struggle between the conservation and preservation of books and the exhibition and public viewing of books which in have it in their nature to be handled.

Calling all book artists and libraries and archive centres for interest in a book art microfilm project.

‘Micro-Pages’ is an idea for a book arts exhibition. A series of selected artists’ books will be turned into a reel of microfilm. The work will be accessed through microfilm readers in participating libraries and archive centres.

Microfilm:
• A film on which printed materials are photographed at greatly reduced size for ease of storage.
• Film containing micro-reproductions of documents for transmission, storage, reading and printing. Microform images are commonly reduced about 25 times from the original document size. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microfilm)

I am looking for libraries and local archives that have working microfilm reader machines who are interested in participating in this book arts exhibition.

Artists who are interested should consider these guidelines when thinking about submitting book works:

• The work should relate to the history of artists’ books, and/or history of libraries and archives.

• Please take into consideration that the microfilm will be in black and white only.

• The work should be no larger than A4 (210 x 297mm).

• The work should be no longer than 30 pages.

Amy,

I think its fits the bill. I think its definately a good one to include. Please find submission details on my blog here: http://abithomas.blogspot.com/2009/02/micro-pages-call-for-submissions.html

Please do bear in mind that the book itself will need to be sent to me by 30th May in order for it to be photographed and processed into microfilm with the other books.

Hi Abigail,

I would be interested in submitting Unknown Ancestry. However, it does not deal, in content, with the history of the artist book or the history of libraries and institutional archives but addresses family history - in that way it deals with personal archives. I did request a few documents that are included as images from government archives such as birth/marriage/death certificates. Is this sufficient for the exhibits parameters?

If it meets the criteria, I would love to submit. Where do I find submission instructions?

Thanks for letting me know about the exhibit.
