Artist Books 3.0

Where artists' books and the book arts meet online...

sub)Missive is a new mail art project investigating the dissemination of ideas with particular reference to (mis)communication and power relations.

Taking the hierarchical construct as a brief, each participant will devise a set of instructions to create a new bookwork. Instructions may be comprehensive or restricted, ranging from the single word to the diagrammatic. Using the social networking forum as a platform for collaboration, each participant will contact the interested party above them in the attending list, after December 15th, for an address to post instructions to. Participants must post instructions out before January 5th.

Once instructions have been received, the collaborative partner will have a further 6 weeks to respond to and create their bookworks for possible inclusion alongside the Leeds International Artist Book Fair. Please retain letters and envelopes as these will be exhibited alongside finished works. Participants may want to consider this in the aesthetic of their instructions.

The completed artist books will travel to the UK to be exhibited at the Leeds International Artist Book fair and then afterwards at Cardiff's Chapel Art Gallery book show.

My particular book instructions included a few pages from a newspaper as well as instructions for a concertina fold.
The text used in the book came from a story in the newspaper. My artist book is entitled 'migration' and derived from newsprint, rubber stamp text and stitching on fabriano paper.

This '(sub)missive artist book project' sounded like a great idea and one I would have been interested in taking part in - shame I missed it. I like the way you have interpreted your 'instructions' - a great way to make a book that is objective and yet still personal!

Available to everyone: Robert Jacks & Printed Matter

10 September - 24 October 2016

Printed Matter is pleased to announce Available to Everyone: Robert Jacks and Printed Matter, curated by Peter Anderson.

The exhibition presents two connected bodies of material: a survey of artists’ books by Australian painter, sculptor and bookmaker Robert Jacks (1942-2014), and an extensive selection of publications drawn from Jacks’ own collection, many of which were purchased from Printed Matter in the early years of the organization.
