Where can I see artist's books in Melbourne & Sydney

Hello All,

I will be visiting Melbourne and Sydney (Adelaide, too) in June. I would like to visit shops or galleries or any location where I can see artist's books -- to view or to purchase. Please share any information you have about artist's books in these cities.

Cheers!
Tony

I have a little gallery in Melbourne called Hand Held, all my details are on my blog www.handheldgallery.blogspot.com we have a small collection of artist books for sale you may be interested in looking at as well as an exhibition space which currently has and (in July, August, October) will have artist book related exhibitions. The June exhibition while you are here will not be book related but the permanent collection will be available to view.

Some Australian commercial galleries to look up would include:
Gallery 101 in Melbourne
Grahame Galleries in Brisbane
Barrett Galleries in Northern NSW

There is also this private collection in Sydney

In Adelaide - make contact with Dianne Longley and she may be able to set up some meetings for you?

If you want to see artists' books at the State Library of Victoria in Melbourne there is a selection on permanent display in the exhibition Mirror of the World: books and ideas however the best option is to contact Des Cowley the Manager of Rare and Printed Collections (who is on this list) and arrange an appointment.

There is also an exhibition of artists' books from the Deakin University collection on display at the Geelong Art Gallery (about an hour out of Melbourne) until 25 July) which is on this list's events page.

In Sydney contact the library at the Art Gallery of New South Wales - they actually hold quite a decent selection of Australian artists' books.

There are also several artists on this list based in Melbourne who you could contact directly.

Some locations with collections of artist books would be the State Library of Victoria, RMIT, Monash University - and probably others.

Some galleries have special interest in artist books - Hand Held Gallery, for instance, whose proprietor is on this list.

Also I have a section of my non-commercial website:www.cecilia-letteringart.com devoted to artist books and this contains galleries of work plus links to those artist book creators with their own websites. I have tried to supply email addresses for all these artists so that they can be contacted by anyone interested in their work.

Hope this is of some help
